Sports Championship Round 1
This week saw the start of the Club's 2008 Championship season with the 1st Round of Sports class.

A very healthy total of 17 Members turned up, with one opting out after the stresses of a day's teaching, leaving 16 to race. We were hoping that at least one other might have shown his face - or is this part of his cunning plan, to miss the first round?

Nice easy Championship system this year - 4 qualifying heats with best 3 to count, followed by bonus point finals.

Due to the very wide range of cars and abilities, qualifying was graded with one grade of straps, one motley grade and two grades of falcons!  This definately made for some good racing - in parts anyway!

Ian B was dominant in qualifying, finishing well ahead of  Malcolm, Phil H and a surprised Chris C in 4th - although only just keeping in front of Jody's flying Falcon.  Behind them things were very close and affected by gear problems - Stuart dropping out early and Ian K ending up well down the order after an inspired start.  Absolutely nothing to chose between Roland, Graham H, Robin and Bill in the mid order - all falcon powered.

The 'D' Final ended up as a 3 man affair with Simon WT coming good to hold off Stephen's challenge and win - both with their best times of the evening, and an
out of form Chris M following behind.

The 'C' Final became the motley crew and looked as if Ian K would run away with it, but his gears went and it was left to Terry to do the winning from Bill and Graham R
in a very close race.

The all-Falcon 'B' Final should have been quite close, although Jody comfortably won ahead of Roland, Graham H and Robin - all more or less a lap apart at the end.
With Stuart having called it a night, the 'A' Final was to be a Dr.B benefit with Ian B winning very easily ahead of Malcolm and Phil H, with Chris C making up the numbers
behind them. The pace did look close to record-breaking at one point but Ian was never under any real pressure.

So, that was it!  Ian B wins the first Round of Sports, but a long way to go yet!
