The
Roedale Slot Car Club have been attending Modelworld since 1978
demonstrating our sport and providing the opportunity for the
public to try slot racing first hand. During this time we estimate
that over a million people have seen our sport, and in excess
of 25,000 have driven the on the track itself.
The
first show in 1978, held in the newly built Brighton Centre and
titled the Brighton Model Railway Show, ran for four full days
over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. At that time we didn't have
our own portable track, but the old Reading Club did and it had
been planned to hold an Area Round on their portable.
No
suitable venue had been found for this, however, so we borrowed
their track for the show and, on the Sunday, ran the only Area
Round ever viewed by the general public.
Billed
as 'A qualifying round for the British National Slot Racing Championships',
it was an outstanding success in its own right and probably the
only time the winner of an Area Round final has been cheered by
a crowd of several hundred!
As
a result of that successful weekend, we promptly built our own
portable track, seen here at an early outing in Midhurst, and
have subsequently displayed it every year at what is now known
as Brighton Model World - this being the 27th consecutive year!

After
some 25 years, our old portable track finally became more or less
worn out and a replacement was needed. The simple design that
had been so successful was retained and the expertise within the
Club was used to good effect to build the new track seen here.

Modelworld
2005 will see the debut of our new portable track, faster and
smoother than its predecessor, but intentionally still easy to
drive to allow newcomers to enjoy
a competitive race after a short practice session.
The
Show itself has changed from being essentially just a model railway
show to one of the biggest and best model and hobby shows in the
UK and we hope to see you at this years Modelworld from Friday
February 18th to Sunday February 20th.
Futher
details are available on the Modelworld
web site.
